The Single Channel Pipette A.K.A. Micropipette – The Most Essential and Utilized Pipette in the Lab
The single channel variable pipette, also referred to as the micropipette, is to a scientist, what a pen is to a writer. Micropipettes are used to transfer small amount of liquid, usually down to 0.1 µL, from one vessel to another. It is essential to any molecular biology lab, as well as being used in chemistry, pharmaceutical and forensic labs, and a tool that every scientist is familiar, even an expert, with. In a molecular biology lab, it is likely to be one of the first tools you learn to use, and one every scientist spends much of their day using. As such, it is worth spending a little time choosing the best single channel pipette for your lab, and to meet your needs.

Single channel variable volume and fixed volume pipettes are available in both manual and electronic formats. The manual format is the classical design and is the most cost effective. The electronic micropipette format is costlier but has added benefits of increased ergonomics and reduced user to user differences, and increased accuracy and precision. Most modern models are designed to both meet accuracy and precision needs while being ergonomic. A focus on ergonomics has come about as more and more scientists have developed Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) due to continual pipetting. New features such as light weight models, low plunger forces, and hand hooks have stifled much of the RSI occurring in the lab today.
Pipette.com provides researchers with the widest selection of single channel variable volume and fixed pipettes, or micropipettes, ranging from Eppendorf®, Sartorius Biohit®, Gilson®, Rainin®, Labnet®, AccuPet®, Capp®, and others.
Eppendorf Pipettes
Eppendorf is a major name in the pipette industry. With a long history of producing laboratory products and designing innovative micropipettes, they revolutionized the industry with the Eppendorf Research Plus Pipette. Light weight, ergonomic, and equipped with a low tip ejection force, the Eppendorf Research Plus is a fully autoclavable pipette that fits into any laboratory. These pipettes also come as variable volume or fixed volume.
Sartorius Pipettes
Sartorius Biohit pipettes are a power house in the pipette world. Known for their ergonomic designs that are both durable and reliable, Sartorius brings a fresh aesthetic look to the laboratory. Their most popular pipette is the mLine Single Channel pipette. Featuring a sleek design, easy volume settings, and consistent precision, the Sartorius Biohit series and Sartorius pipettes live up to their name. These pipettes also come as variable volume or fixed volume.
Rainin Pipettes
Known for their high standards, Rainin has meticulously manufactured pipettes crafted for ergonomic and accurate pipetting. Rainin pipettes are one of a kind with magnetic assist technology which ensures gentle operation and significantly reducing the risk of RSI. This makes Rainin one of the most ergonomic and trusted pipettes on the market. These pipettes also come as variable volume or fixed volume.
Gilson
Renowned for their invention of the micropipette, Gilson has a legacy in the pipette industry. Being one of the most commonly used pipettes in the laboratory, Gilson continues to innovate their original product. Providing quality, durable, and accurate products, Gilson pipettes stand up to their reputation. These pipettes also come as variable volume or fixed volume.
Micropipette or Single Channel Pipettes Must be Calibrated Regularly
It is important to calibrate your variable pipette and fixed pipette at least once a year. Depending on what type of work you're doing, you might need have your variable pipette and fixed volume pipette calibrated more often. If you're working with heavy chemicals, those tend to take a toll on your single channel pipettes' accuracy at a quicker rate, leading to a need for more frequent pipette calibration. If you are unsure of how often your micropipettes need to be calibrated, it is advised to check with your QA manager.
