Cell & Tissue Culture
General Product Information
Cell & Tissue Culture are referred to methods used to cultivate, propagate, and grow eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells under controlled conditions.
The origin of these methods can be traced back to 20th century when it was used to study cell growth and maturation, vaccine development, understanding the role of genes in the body, generation of cell lines for its applications in biopharmaceuticals. Cell / Tissue culture methods have proved to be the greatest tool for studying disease mechanisms in cells, the development of drugs, toxicity studies of novel compounds. Its advantage is to study phenotype changes occurring when the genotype is altered.
Different types of cell types can be grown. Cell cultures can be adherent or non-adherent. Adherent cell types are the ones that grow by being attached to the culture dish and non-adherent ones do not attach to the surface. Cell culture experiments are conducted in two different kinds of environment:
In-vivo: Cell & Tissue culture is grown within organisms
In-vitro: Cells growing in a culture outside the living organism
When the culture is suspended into a growth medium it is called the primary culture. The primary culture proliferates into a cell line which later after making specific selections grows into a cell stain under appropriate conditions. The progression of Cell / Tissue culture as sophisticated technology is based on two major medical branches: virology and oncology. Cell culture has also been welcomed in many medicines and manufacturing routine applications like:
- Model Systems in Health and Disease
- Drug Development and Drug Testing
- Virology and Vaccine Production
- Tissue Regeneration and Transplantation
- Genetic Engineering and Gene Therapy
