Hamilton Company Reversed-Phase Columns Product Description
Polymer Packings
Hamilton Polymers - Poly(styrene divinylbenzene) or PS-DVB is a robust polymer material used as the base framework for all the Hamilton polymer HPLC packing materials. The high degree of cross-linking with divinylbenzene makes the polymer bead extremely durable for high pressure applications.
Polymer columns can handle pressures over 5,000 psi, have a usable pH range of 1‐13, and can be cleaned with 1.0 M sodium hydroxide to remove strongly retained material. Swelling in organic solvents such as THF or chloroform is negligible because of the cross‐linking. PS-DVB resins can be operated at much higher temperatures as compared to silica based materials, and they provide excellent sample recoveries due to the lack of acidic silanol groups. Polymer columns are similar in retention characteristics to a C18, however, selectivity can be slightly different in some cases.
PRP-C18
PRP-C18 columns have genuine pH and chemical stability. The stationary phase stands up to prolonged exposure to concentrations as high as 1 M NaOH and 1 M H2SO4, with no measurable decrease in performance. The support does not strip, bleed, or dissolve at any pH. It can therefore perform reliably and reproducibly throughout the extended life of the column, regardless of mobile phase conditions. Unlike a silica C18 column, the PRP-C18 is resistant to temperatures above 100°C.
PRP-1
PRP-1 columns have inherent reversed-phase separation qualities that eliminate the requirement for a stationary phase coating. Hydrolysis of the stationary phase coating is often the limiting factor in column lifetime, so the lack of coating on the PRP-1 resin extends the longevity of the column. PRP-1 also have exceptional sample recovery (≥ 95%).

PRP-3
PRP-3 particles come with a larger (300 Å) pore size for protein separation. No silanol groups on the resin means no irreversible protein adsorption, giving > 90% analyte recovery. This stable material also allows the use of concentrated acids, chaotropes, and even detergents to minimize problems with protein solubility.
Application Examples: Organic compounds: large molecules (> 2,000 mw), peptides, proteins, protein digests, protected and deprotected oligonucleotides, nucleic acids.
PRP-H5
Pentafluoro reversed-phase column for unique selectivity
The PRP-h5 derives its hydrophobic functionality from a pentafluorinated polymer bead, delivering a selectivity difference from standard silica C18 stationary phases. This gives chromatographers the desired retention characteristics necessary for certain sample types. This difference is especially pronounced for halogenated solutes.
Unlike silica-based C8 or C18 columns, PRP-h5 has no stationary phase coating. Since there is no stationary phase to hydrolyze, the column maintains its performance characteristics longer than silica-based C8 or C18 columns.

Silica Packings
Alkylated silica is used for reversed-phase HPLC columns. Hamilton offers two varieties of this composition: C18 and C8. C18 columns are more hydrophobic than C8 columns and thereby retain hydrophobic analytes more strongly than a C8 column will. Due to stronger retention, C18 columns tend to result in longer retention times and better separations. C8 columns result in shorter analyte retention times which produce faster analysis times.
HxSil C18
Silica packing material for a variety of reversed-phase separations Hamilton HxSil C18 columns are well end-capped for retention time reproducibility and durability. HxSil C18 columns exhibit greater retention than most columns and enhances the separation of compounds that are not sufficiently retained on other C18 columns.
Application Examples: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, small organic molecules.
HxSil C8
Silica packing material for a variety of reversed-phase separations Hamilton HxSil C8 columns are well end-capped for retention time reproducibility and durability. The C8 demonstrates excellent selectivity needed for complex sample mixtures and gives shorter retention times than a C18.
